The best kind of email comes with the subject line: “We’ve got a wild idea.”
And if you’ve spent any time in the creative industries, you know that when an email like that lands, you brace for a little hit to the vein. It means we’re about to dance outside the lines of what we already know and be given the chance to let imagination run loose, just like the golden man himself.
Creatives and brand managers use the term “on brand” as part of their regular vernacular, but in this case, this collaboration was a match made in metaverse heaven. Once again, Bruce Ryder finds himself striding his gold boots into new territory. Not just another “AI first” for the sake of software headlines, but something far more intoxicating, a collaborative first that shows where this entire space of hyper-media is heading.
The invitation came from Marie-Céline Merret Wirström and Vinne Schifferstein Vidal, the creative leaders behind the AARON Awards. There wasn’t a rigid brief or over-engineered framework. Instead, there was space, space to explore, to play, and to build something that didn’t yet exist. Most importantly, to have as much fun as possible in the process which represents the entire ethos of Bruce Ryder himself.
Life’s a wild ride kid, jump in and grab it by the balls.
What followed was the kind of creative dance that reminds you why we embark on this bent, borderline-delusional paths in the first place. The kind where ideas move quickly, where the usual constraints fall away, and where the process itself becomes just as exciting as the outcome.
Could we do it? Yes. Would it work? Let’s find out. What happens if we push it further? Let’s go.
This is the boundary I believe these generative tools are asking us to break. They are not asking us to stay within the confines of what we already know. They are asking us to expand our minds and comfort zones to test ideas in real time, to collaborate without friction, and to follow “wild ideas” without waiting for perfect conditions or budget.
This is the new ground I believe generative AI is cheerleading us to explore. This is what hyper-media could be for interactive entertainment. The result of this particular collaboration is a global first: Bruce Ryder will co-host a virtual awards show for the AARON Awards, celebrating AI innovation in Brand and Advertising, broadcast to an international audience.
But the significance of this moment goes beyond the ‘fun collab”.
Bruce Ryder did not begin as an awards host. He was created as a brand ambassador for a men’s body care brand. From there, he evolved, developing a voice, a personality, a merchandise range, followers, and his own platform. Each step has expanded what an AI character can represent within hyper-fiction and how it can engage with other people’s audiences.
We’re no longer facing the limits we once did. Geography no longer limits collaboration which is evident in the panel Bruce is hosting with jury members based all over the world. Timelines compress. The distance between imagining something and building it has narrowed significantly, but wild ideas still remain the spine of the concept.
And perhaps the most important part of this shift is not the technology itself, but the mindset of pure curiosity I hope it inspires in those excited to pick up these tools and express their ideas.
Because at its core, this comes down to giving each other permission to say, “fck it, why not?” We don’t need to take huge financial risks to see if something has value in the new entertainment economy. Permission to experiment. Permission to play. Permission to follow an idea purely because it is interesting enough to explore. That is what makes collaborations like this so energising. They are not bound by what has been done before. They are driven by what could be done next.
Bruce Ryder stepping into this role is another marker of that movement. Not a final destination, but the glorious expansion of it.
This is new territory. It’s not tryin to replace film, advertising or anything we have already mastered as creatives.
