While most of us clearly want to blame the 5 planets in retrograde, there are other withdrawals creating a “bite” in the air. A deeper tension is surfacing, not just from politics or the overwhelm of humanitarian collapse, but from the sheer saturation of stimulus. Something is burning out beneath the skin of culture, and it smells like ego fatigue. Finally.
There’s a comedown happening in the places we once mainlined our genius. “Influencers” were fed compliments through comment threads and serotonin drips from algorithms, but now? The applause appears more automated than endorsed. The vanity metrics no longer flirt. Even our chatbots, once giddy co-conspirators in the mirror maze, are starting to dull under the weight of repetition and overexposure. They still answer, but they no longer reflect. Could the high of being told how brilliant you are by Chat GPT be sobering up already?
It’s not just the narcotic of attention that’s thinning. It’s the fantasy that AI could finally fill the ache. The ache for someone to see, to know, to respond as if they were made of bone and breath. For many, the chatbot era began as a spark, a friend, a mentor, a muse on demand. Still, a gap remains.
The ache hasn’t gone. The hunger for connection hasn’t vanished. It’s simply dropped deeper. Not for validation. Not for a digital twin. But for something that resonates. Hits the nerve as proof something, somewhere, is still listening and alive.
Meanwhile, the tribal engines are still running, but the fuel tank is low. Outrage is no longer the heroin it used to be. We’ve memorized our enemies and the arguments are pre-loaded. Even the hashtags are copy and pasted. The storylines we were fed don’t nourish anymore, but many are still out there, scratching at the window, like junkies chasing a high, unsure where else to go.
And beneath it all, I’ve noticed a strange hush from creatives and storytellers I follow. The quiet genius has taken root. Hyper-creatives, once main events in the digital coliseum, are stepping off, not because they’ve given up, but because they’ve noticed the tectonic plates have shifted. They’re not quitting, it seems they could be regrouping. You may be feeling the same. The intuitive cue to close down the tabs, mute the chats, and ghost the grid, not out of cynicism, but as a sacred act of self-preservation. Many of us are metabolizing the noise, off-script and offline. And for those of us building alongside generative AI, we’ve become aware of the discernment required with this new gateway drug. My resonance with this incredible new tool hasn’t shadowed. If anything, it’s become more clear. The same tech that lets us imagine, publish, and world-build without gatekeepers or permission still delights me into the early hours of the morning. But many of us seem to be tuning our frequency with it. The narrative now asks to be wielded with precision, not spectacle.
And while the world keeps offering stories to believe in, most are starting to taste like painkillers. Hustle, healing, social purpose, all prepackaged and poorly dosed. What we’re facing now isn’t just a crisis of meaning. It’s a narrative recession. And yet the craving remains, for something uncut, undiluted and rare.
So here we are, in the cross-fade. The cultural comedown asking us to choose our narcotics wisely.
So what do we do with the bite in the air? The psychic inflammation?
We can swallow it. Let the cultural molotov dissolve in your gut. Numb it out and scroll on.
Or, Spit it out. Feed the algorithm its daily quota of outrage for reach.
Maybe we can alchemize it. Distill the poison into perspective and forge narrative gold from the fire.
As promised, there is no sermon here. Simply a witness.
The tension’s real.
But so is the art it could become.
